Krystalyne Slay has become one of the go-to DSPs in Little City’s Children’s program.
In her three and a half years at Little City, Krystalyne has learned the ins and outs of almost every home in the Duffy Family Children’s Village, ready and willing to take on whatever challenges may come. Because each home is uniquely structured to serve children with varying levels of independence and needs, DSPs need to be able to adapt. While Larry’s Home is focused on older children preparing for adult programming, the Coleman Foundation Home is focused on supporting younger children with greater needs. And while some DSPs focus on a single home, Krystalyne said she loves the challenge and experience of working across homes.
It is an unexpected and life-changing surprise for someone who had never worked in the I/DD field before coming to Little City in 2021.
“I was always interested in working with children with special needs just to see if it was for me, so when the opportunity came up to work at Little City I was excited to try it. But I am a person where I can get discouraged or feel stuck if something becomes too challenging or doesn’t feel like a fit so I wasn’t sure how long I would be here. But it has been absolutely amazing and is something I know I want to build a career in. Getting to build relationships with the children is something I really enjoy. Anytime a new kid comes in and I get to know them it’s like I have another good challenge ahead in figuring out how to help them grow and reach those breakthroughs. And I have had to say goodbye to kids too when they age out or move programs and it feels like saying goodbye to family. I’ve loved the work here and the team and enjoy coming to work.”
